My Williamsburg field trip by Olivia
This field trip was really fun. I liked the bus ride most of all. Because everyone was moving around and going to different seats, we got to do whatever we wanted. But when we were at Williamsburg, my group was Cat, Macy, Katie, Hallie, Avery, and me:) I was so happy with my group. Especially Cat, she was so fun there.
I did not get any souvenirs at any of the gift shops and I regret that. I just got a soda that was $3.00. Stuff in Williamsburg is expensive. While we were there we went to a wig shop. At the wig shop we learned that you have to cut your hair off to get a wig. I would not want to do that. But they also sew it onto your head.
We also played a game with sticks and hoops. What we did was a relay race. What you do is, you hit the hoop with the stick and you have to roll it across the ground. What was really cool was we got to see a bunch of pretty horses and we got to go into the House of Burgesses. When we went to the bakery it took forever to walk there. We took a break every 10 seconds!

My Thanksgiving Holiday by Joe
Here’s what I did during Thanksgiving break: I went down to see my 88-year-old grandmother in Williamsburg, had a great Thanksgiving dinner at the “Seafare”, had a huge breakfast of french toast, went to Colonial Williamsburg where I got flint and steel. My Thanksgiving break was awesome!

Cookies or Cookie Dough? by Leah
In the 5th grade library class, I asked everyone if they liked cookies or cookie dough better. This is what they said:
3 people liked cookies better
10 people liked cookie dough better
I would choose cookie dough. What would you choose?
I used this website to make the pie chart: http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/default.aspx

Get Up and Move 2012! by Avery and Olivia
Today, our school is participating in a world wide get up and move day.
The school will all do 60 seconds of different exercises in their
classrooms. We met with Mr. Flowers and asked him a couple questions.
Here they are.
Reporters: What is the purpose for doing these exercises?
Mr. Flowers: We want to be able to get students moving and not only that we are trying to accomplish a world record.
Reporters: How many students will be participating?
Mr. Flowers: Everyone in the school will be participating and many more schools.
Other news and information:
Virginia has 23,931 students that will be participating. We hope everyone can come and enjoy our get up and move day!

Places to Visit in Virginia by Meme and Kendall
Virginia is a cool place to visit. We are only 3 hours from
Virginia beach. When I go to Virginia beach I like to go to the
Boardwalk. The Boardwalk is a raised sidewalk right off the beach. There
are lots of restaurants and amusement park rides and you can rent
bikes. The Boardwalk is a fun place to go with your family.
In 4th grade we went on a field trip to Jamestown. It was cool because we got to see what Jamestown was like in 1607. We got to see how they made their beds, food and what their lives were like.

Differences between England and Virginia by Skye
There are some differences in school too. We ride a school bus, while you guys ride a public bus (says my parents). We have specials, library, music class, art class, extra maths, and we alternate through guidance and gifted every week. Summer vacation is different also. We get out earlier for summer, you go back to school later than us. Our reading class is called ‘Language Arts’. What’s yours? Our maths is called math. We don’t add on the s at the end. Our playtime is called ‘recess’. I know yours is called playtime. At least, it was when I went to school there. Another thing different about England and VA (Virginia) is the accents. If we say ‘r’, for instance, it would sound kind of like the growling of a dog. Grrr! But yours sound like ‘o’. Not ‘oh’, the proper name. ‘O’. The names of our schools are different too. ‘Primary school’, and ‘elementary school’. Or ‘secondary school’ and ‘middle school’. Those two make sense. Our next school is called ‘high school’, what’s yours?
Honestly, I think your books are better than ours. Ours are rather good, a lot of them are rubbish though. Have any of you heard of Warriors by Erin Hunter? One of my friends there has, so I figured some of you would. Heard of Redwall by Brian Jacques? I expect you’ve heard of Enid Blyton. If you haven’t, she is a British author and I love her books!
I hope this post was enjoyable!

Our School and What 5th grade is Doing by Avery
About our school
Broadus Wood Elementary school has 275 students. We are on the smaller side than most schools. We have three kindergarten teachers, two first grade teachers, three second grade teachers, two third grade teachers, two fourth grade teachers and two fifth grade teachers. We are sort of out in the middle of nowhere. We have five different specials, for example, Music, Library, Gifted, Guidance, and P.E. (physical education).
Here are some things that we are learning about in Language Arts. We always have a free read time at the beginning of our class, then we have word study, (where we work on spelling words). We are studying homophones. Our teacher always reads to us then we write about what she read. Soon we will be starting literature circles where small groups of students read the same book and then talk about it together

Here
is what we are learning about in math. In math we are doing a lot of
multiplication problems. We are learning new and different methods and
trying to stretch our brain. We do a lot of group work and play a lot of
fun games. I love math plus we have a very good teacher to teach it to
us. We are also starting more of solving 2 multiplication problems and
finding out which is greater.
Here
is what we are learning about in science. In science we are learning
about matter. We have covered atoms, protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Now we are finishing the three states of matter and starting mixtures
and solutions. One of my favorite things we are studying about is
elements and compounds. One of the projects we have completed is making
our own element. My element was oxygen. We had to do research on our
element and then write it down. I love science.
In
Social Studies we are learning about Colonial Virginia and how they
lived. We have done projects about life in the old days. My groups
poster was housing. I wish I could tell you everything but let me just
tell you a couple facts about houses. There windows were often made of
waxed paper instead of glass. Also there cooking often came from an open
fire. Other groups did clothing, food, and jobs. Now we are doing a
play about credit. Credit is when you buy something now and pay for it
later.
You should visit Virginia someday. Don’t forget to stop by our school!
